Three things:
- Wippermann's Undefinierte Balun uses 21 turns, but it works from 160 thru 10. For 40 thru 10 you can use a lot fewer windings. I would recommend 17 turns (8 per side, plus the fold-back).
- Do not build it as Wolfgang shows. He used wire-ties to secure the wire to the core. I fear the wire-ties might damage the enamel insulation. Instead, I recommend using a drop of 2-component epoxy to hold the ends in place.
- Before you wind the wires through the core, it is a good idea to wrap the core with thin Teflon-tape, like used by plumbers for sealing faucets so that they don't leak. You get this in any Obi or Bauhaus. Alternative: you can paint the core with red fingernail polish. Paint one half, let it dry, then paint the other half.
